On the edge of Eternity is Affrelta, "Ifrit Town". The creatures which live in this dark city are half-feral, half-corporeal, an utterly religious yet unholy people. Allan Sorenson has been brought by one of these otherworldly creatures, one of these Ifreet, to fight on their side. Along with two other warriors - a crystalline witch and a forsaken angel - he is told that he must do what he can to prevent Eternity from falling into the wrong hands.
In neighbouring realms, the Utukku spirits are ahead in the race. They have chosen the human puppet which will sit on the throne for them, a woman named Ve who is devastated by heartache and catatonic with grief. The vicious animals which carry her through the underworld keep her alive for their one purpose, and damned be the soul who tries to free her from their thrall …
Allan must now survive the ephemeral spies which plague his dreams, the revolt of the Enclave, and a dramatic attack materialised into the city by the enemies of the Ifreet. He and his friends must endure heartbreak, miscarriage and bloody confrontations before Eternity can rest.
