Substantial - David Brookes

As the Conflict tears across Europe and the Americas, Earth is facing other problems: An earthquake at Yellowstone Park, volcano eruptions in Spain, terrible storms off the European coasts.  Dark spots have appeared on the flawless surface of the Sun, and they are affecting Earth’s magnetic fields.  There’s little that the authorities can do, except consult the experts – and they’re halfway to the Sun already.

The heliostation Zócalo: a penumbrology observation post 25 million kilometres inside of Mercury’s solar orbit.  Built to withstand the extreme temperatures and gravitation pull, the station requires the ultimate sacrifice in order to be occupied: a nine-strong team of scientists willing to divorce mind from body and have their digitised consciousnesses inserted into invulnerable mechanical “dummies”.

Gad Everett is sent to investigate.  He soon suspects that the unusual solar phenomena and the sabotage of the heliostation’s equipment are somehow connected.  But why is the station’s deformed captain reticent to investigate?  And how are the scientists suddenly waking up with other people’s memories?

With the desperate situation on Earth only getting worse, Shad is eager to return home as soon as possible – not least because his own reinforced body is beginning to deteriorate under the enormous strain…
